And when I say renovated, I mean up, down and all around...custom-built from the cabinets to the handles. I love that they have all the modern amenities and tons of work area, but the room still has an original feel to it. And of course, the darling blue cabinetry! Hi everybody! I'm Erin, but not the Erin you're used to seeing here. I'm Erin from <a href="http://www.theimpatientgardener.com/" target="_blank">The Impatient Gardener</a> and I'm thrilled to be guest blogging on House of Turquoise today.<br /><br />Erin (the other one) does such a wonderful job posting inspirational spaces featuring one of my favorite colors so it's no surprise that the spaces I saw here on House of Turquoise influenced many of the rooms in our house, which underwent a pretty substantial renovation last year. You can read about the renovation <a href="http://www.theimpatientgardener.com/p/cottage.html" target="_blank">here</a>, but it can be more or less summed up by saying that our goal was not to make our house bigger, just better. We had the top of half the house (an old Cape Cod-ish cottage located about 500 feet from the shore of Lake Michigan in southeastern Wisconsin) taken off and put back on higher, allowing us to add much more usable space, including a second bathroom.<br /><br />Turquoise and blue (along with a healthy dose of gray) featured prominently in many of the rooms.<br /><br />The bathroom was the most fun to decorate and we went all out because it will probably be the only bathroom we'll ever design. It's a relatively small bathroom—8 feet square—but we fit in a sizable shower, vanity and lots of storage.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img src="http://cptnrin.smugmug.com/photos/i-tNbm9dN/0/O/i-tNbm9dN.jpg" /><br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img src="http://cptnrin.smugmug.com/photos/i-gxLkgb5/0/O/i-gxLkgb5.jpg" /><br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img src="http://cptnrin.smugmug.com/photos/i-BdnHkc4/0/O/i-BdnHkc4.jpg" /><br /></div><br />The master bedroom stayed basically the same size as before the renovation, but it feels twice as big thanks to the addition of windows on the east wall and a high ceiling.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img src="http://cptnrin.smugmug.com/photos/i-W7TKKVX/0/O/i-W7TKKVX.jpg" /><br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img src="http://cptnrin.smugmug.com/photos/i-2LRhVPN/0/O/i-2LRhVPN.jpg" /><br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img src="http://cptnrin.smugmug.com/photos/i-vJjWW99/0/O/i-vJjWW99.jpg" /><br /></div><br />In the hallway I made a small gallery wall. It's really the only place we display family photos so we have everything from a wedding photo, to pictures of our dogs and cat to a great black and white photo of my grandmother. At the bottom is a board we uncovered when we took the roof off that says, "Put here July 11, 1938." I put it in a shadow box with some linen fabric on the back. I also hung a piece of driftwood that I've been hanging onto for awhile just because I thought it was interesting looking. I collected a variety of frames for the wall and painted several of them different shades of blue mixed from paint I had laying around.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img src="http://cptnrin.smugmug.com/photos/i-jM5VQRR/0/O/i-jM5VQRR.jpg" /><br /><br /><img src="http://cptnrin.smugmug.com/photos/i-Km6S2Nh/0/O/i-Km6S2Nh.jpg" /><br /></div><br />I hope you enjoyed this peak at some of our renovated spaces. Choosing great end tables

<br />It requires a lot of patience to find the perfect end tables for a room. These tables are  part of your overall room design and you should follow some general guidelines to make sure they don't distract from your focal point or create too much conflict with everything else that is going on in the room. It's a delicate balance between your personal preferences and basic standards of design. <br /><br /> <b>Do end tables have to match the coffee table?</b><br /><br />NO!  Having three tables in a space all matching sounds like a recipe for boredom in my opinion.  I know it's easy when you buy a set and  I know many homeowners opt for this solution, but I like a more curated look where each piece has obviously been given careful consideration and chosen for the space.  It is important that the pieces harmonize in the space or provide an impact whichever you are going for.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"> <a href="http://www.houzz.com/photos/186208/Glenwood-Residence-contemporary-living-room-other-metros"><img alt="Glenwood Residence contemporary living room" border="0" height="400" src="http://st.houzz.com/simages/186208_0_8-9546-contemporary-living-room.jpg" width="265" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><small><a href="http://www.houzz.com/professional/12637/Tobi-Fairley" style="color: #444444; text-decoration: none;">Tobi Fairley</a></small></div><b></b><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /><div style="text-align: left;">In this room the end tables match each other and are light and airy which is in  opposition to the coffee table which is upholstered and dark. I would argue that the end tables, while very interesting  in the overall design scheme, are too high.  I could see more than one elbow smacked on these! That leads to the second consideration. <b><br /></b><br /> <b> </b><br /><b>What's the perfect height for end tables? </b><br /><br /> By function an end table is usually placed by a chair or sofa and you have to lift your arm over the arm of the furniture to lay something on the table.  Remember function first.<b> </b> They also need to be tall enough to provide a base for a lamp which should be a reasonable height to shed light.  24 - 26" is the usual  the  height of an  end table (some are as tall as 30in.), but the chosen table should work with the proportions of your other furniture.  A simpler way to say this is have your tables just  below the height of the arm of the sofa/chair. But these are guidelines. These nesting tables work beautifully with the lines of the chair.  I like the use of the floor lamp with this vignette rather than having an overpowering lamp on these delicate tables.Threes always make interesting pairings. <br /><br /><b>How do you choose a style/</b><b>shape/</b><b>colour?</b><br /><br />Your end tables can match the style of your other furniture or they can make a statement by having a dissimilar style. There are many ways to go when choosing shape. A square shape is a good connecting piece when you have sofas or sofa and chair at right angles to each other.  It fits into the shape well and creates continuous flow.    Some may find it too continuous and seek out a round shape to soften the look.   <br /><br />If you have soft furniture with rounded lines, a table with clean, straight lines adds variety to the look. The colour should be different enough so that it stands out from the floor colour.   If you don't plan to invest in an area rug on hardwood floors, choose tables that are lighter or darker than your wood floors. This is one of the biggest mistakes homeowners make when choosing  tables of any kind. I call it the disappearing furniture syndrome.

The natural materials, vintage elements and pretty colors are what do it for me here. I just love the the weathered wood on the chest and quatrefoil mirror, the fabulous upholstered headboard, not to mention the burst of color from the pillows and bedskirt! Rustic chic...I'll take it! We're flying down (via Vegas, baby!) then driving back...28 hrs! It's kind of a weird way to spend Thanksgiving but we're super excited! Charley has been living with his breeder since April doing the show/breeding thing (he's very handsome!) and we've really missed him–Chris especially, who has had him since before we met. Is there anything sweeter than a reunion with an animal??
