Doesn't get much better than this! Located in the hills of Northwest Austin, this breathtaking home designed by Glynis Wood Interiors and photographed by Bryant Hill has a fabulous rustic twist to its contemporary style. The color palette just sings to me; the layers of neutrals and sea-inspired blues and greens are so relaxing! Love all the textures inside and out, the great big windows and unique light fixtures, not to mention that incredible outdoor living area! I'd be out there ALL the time! Thornton Designs

I became a life-long fan of Connecticut interior designer Lee Ann Thornton of Thornton Designs several years ago (you'll see why here!) so I was ecstatic to see her work featured on the cover of March's House Beautiful! Lee Ann shared more photos of the Old Greenwich home taken by photographer Karyn R. Millet on her blog, and I couldn't resist sharing them with you! Such peaceful colors and natural textures everywhere, all inspired by the seaside location of the home. I adore the blue that Lee Ann custom-mixed for the living room walls and gallery trim, and the fabulous Quadrille fabrics she chose for those spaces. And I love the pops of orange in the bedroom! Kissing objects and other design issues

This is the first post of a series I have planned to focus on arranging objects in a pleasing way in your home.

The same principles of design that are the backbone of a good painting can be applied to designing a room or a vignette.  People often know when something doesn't look right , but they might not be able to articulate why they have that feeling. I thought I would focus on some of the finer points that can move a space from fine to fantastic.

Do you have....

Kissing objects
That's the best way to describe objects that touch each other or look like they are touching  thus causing an odd tension/confusion.  Is it one object? Two objects? Why are they side by side? etc.

These two nesting dolls tell the story.  Do you want to move them apart? Another thing that happens when object touch or are too close together is the creation of boring negative space especially when the objects have the same form. You can see that the shape between the two dolls in almost symmetrical.

When the objects are overlapped slightly you create more visual interest and depth.  If you can add a third object for variety, so much the better. Note the spacing in the middle.

I would be the first person to admit that there are beautiful objects in this collection, but I want to appreciate them individually.

If you have a huge quantity of objects in a collection you might be better served by choosing a more thougtht out way of displaying them rather than massing them together randomly.  This collection reads as quantity and the beautiful forms are lost in the "gathering".

 Exception to the rule
Then there is the exception to the rule. I don't think having the two pots touching in this vignette is at all boring because of the variety in direction and shape created by the small trees.  The enclosed space between the pots is interesting because of the legs.  There is so much else going on that this just works well.

Furniture can kiss too!  When you have a curved/slanted arm on a sofa or chair move your end table out so it is not touching the sofa. It frees up space and creates visual ease. If the arm of sofa is curved you often have to move a table out even further.

Castaway Villa

Come the middle of February, there is nothing this Minnesota girl wants more than to jet away to somewhere warm! Castaway Villa on the coast of Turks and Caicos would do more than fit the bill.  I love the mix of modern elements and rustic island touches in the home's decor, but the infinity pool, outdoor shower and secluded beach are leaving me in a daydream! And that water! Oh the water. And an average high of 81°F in February! Tour the rest of the home and get the rental details over here! (Maybe if we all chip in???)

Have a great weekend! Stay warm out there! :)

Becki Peckham

Beautiful and cozy, that might be one of my favorite combinations! Located on an oceanside bluff in Newfoundland, Canada, the charming home photographed by Becki Peckham of Adventures of The Uncommon Common Law definitely has coastal flair with the the sea-inspired walls (painted Raindance by Benjamin Moore) and beachy accessories. But I love the relaxed, country vibe going on too–the chicken wire on the kitchen cabinet is a cute touch! How great it would be to have such a large kitchen and fab appliances, not to mention huge island (painted Gray Wisp by Benjamin Moore)! You can tour the rest of the lovely home and learn the sources from Becki's Houzz article here!
